Vagabundo, a classic Motor Sailor with a ketch sail plan, was designed by Walton Hubbard Jr. Co. and Frederick C Brewer for Louis Cass. She was built by South Coast Boat Building Co. in Newport Beach, California. Louis Cass, an active boater, with his family took Vagabundo on many fishing trips to Catalina and Ensenada. During WWII, Vagabundo saw duty as a Coast Guard surveillance vessel and still wears her 7 chevrons proudly as authorized by the Secretary of the Navy.

In 1968 Harold and Helen Ayres acquired Vagabundo from the Cass estate and immediately embarked on a complete renovation and modernization program. The latest in galley and electronic equipment were installed and she was restored to classic yacht condition. As a result during the 1969 opening day yacht inspection at Newport Harbor Yacht Club, Vagabundo won first place for power boats more than 40 feet. Don Culver assumed stewardship in 1976 and brought Vagabundo up the coast to Seattle. In 1994, the current owners undertook a multi-year program of restoration and modernization, again restoring her to classic yacht condition.

Interior Accommodations

Starting forward with the chain locker, which is easily accessed through a large access door.  Next you will find a spacious V-berth with two bunks, additional storage shelves and hanging rods.

Moving aft, one step up and thru a door, you enter the master stateroom with ensuite head and shower.  The stateroom has a full-size bed, bedside table, headboard, large under bed storage drawers and a wardrobe closet with drawers, as well as a second hanging locker.  These accommodations are custom built to maximize comfort and space utilization. Ventilation and light are provided by two portholes forward and two portholes port and starboard.

You enter the master head thru a sliding door.  The master head has a stand-up shower with a Grohe rainshower head and fixtures,  Vacuflush head, Runtal towel warmers, medicine cabinet and a vintage sink. Heat is provided by cast iron radiators and in-floor heat. 

Moving aft and starboard and up six steps you enter the wheelhouse.  Along the way, you will pass the Miele washer and dryer behind sliding doors to starboard and to port is the access to the engine room.  Adjacent to the engine room door is a hanging closet, with shelves. 

The wheelhouse has 360-degree view and port and starboard Dutch doors to the side decks. The helm is on the centerline with a large chart table. On the port side is custom L-shaped leather settee and on the starboard a matching leather bench. For ventilation open the top or full Dutch doors or the two tilting windows aft or the hatch. Heat is provided by cast iron radiators, in-floor heat.

Down three steps aft you will find the custom luxury galley on the port side with the Viking Range, Beverage Air Refrigerator, Trash Compactor, Fisher and Paykel Dishdrawer and 12 drawers for customized storage options. (see expanded description). 

Immediately on the starboard side is the guest head with a sliding door, inside is a Vacuflush head, mirror and shelf, vintage sink and a large porthole. Just behind the head is a cabinet with storage drawers and the freezer.

Aft of the galley, the salon contains a custom leather settee, which converts to a double berth on port, and a table and chairs to starboard. For light and ventilation there are eight windows, two of which are hopper windows on either side of the aft salon cabin door, and a large overhead hatch in the galley, Heat is provided by cast iron radiators and in-floor heat.

Engine Room

Located below the wheelhouse, this is the heart of Vagabundo. Access is from the forward companionway through a Dutch door and down a step. A well-lit space with the Atlas at its center surrounded by a grated walkway for full engine access. Located outboard of the walkways are the fuel management system, fuel polishing system, fire suppression system, generator, boiler, air compressor, domestic hot water heater, inverter, AGM batteries and control panels for the AC and DC systems. As a bonus, full headroom is present at the work bench. The engine room is mechanically ventilated.

Exterior Decks

The decks are teak over fir.  The aft deck provides extensive comfortable seating, as well as storage lockers for equipment, and a chest refrigerator.  The forward deck holds the windlass, ground tackle, dorade box and hatch into the forepeak.  On the aft cabin top is a locker storing propane bottles.  On the forward cabin top, a large storage locker backs against the front of the wheelhouse. Safe movement on deck is afforded on either port or starboard behind a combination of bulwarks, nickel plated bronze stanchions and stainless-steel cable.

Heating
