Speedwell

Speedwell was built in South Africa to Arthur Robb design and launched at the end of 1979, then went on to cruise the South and North Atlantic before going on to circumnavigate the world over many years.
The builder/owner (John Goodwin) brought Speedwell to the Pacific Northwest for more cruising before moving ashore.

48’ on deck and 52 LOA, 13’ beam and 7’6” draft.

Hull: Cold moulded; MAKROI: 10 layers of 3mm veneers (of varying widths), glued diagonally. Using “Resorcinol” glue.
Keelson, laminated stem, stern post and horntimber are IROKO.
Stringer are SITKA SPRUCE.
Floors are Laminated IROKO.
Sheer Clamps are DOUGLAS FIR.
Deck Beams are laminated MAKORI and SPRUCE.
Deck is 1/4” BRUYZEEL PLYWOOD, 5 layers of 3mm MAKORI (and originally 12mm of Burmese TEAK). Now replaced with 2 layers of 1/4” marine plywood using West Systems Epoxy with 403 and 404 fillers and one layer of 10 oz glass cloth.
Interior joinery work is a variety of Burmese TEAK, South African YELLOWWOOD and STINKWOOD, African EBONY, South African PEAR and BLACKWOOD

The foredeck and side decks underwent a rebuild in 2020. I will be happy to discuss the process of the work.

All electrical wiring has been replaced. New electrical panel and LED lights.
New stainless steel standing rigging for the main mast in 2021 from Blanchard Rigging.
New 110% furling jib 2024 from Leitch & McBride.
Engine is a Yanmar 4JH4E. Repowered is St. Martin in 2008
